Competency Eight:

The ability to represent and communicate child life practice and psychosocial issues of infants, children, youth, and families to others.

My research proposal advocates for more comprehensive research regarding the benefits of Child Life services for bereaved siblings. The paper communicates the psychosocial issues children face after losing a sibling meeting Competency Eight. Furthermore, while writing this proposal I became aware of the significant gap in research regarding bereaved siblings and how to support them, inspiring my third research goal of continuing my research on how sibling loss impacts child development. This topic is one I am extremely passionate about, and I plan to strongly advocate for more thorough and increased longevity of child life services for bereaved siblings.

My literature review addresses the mental health crisis adolescents are facing today, and advocates for the use of child life services in psychiatric inpatient hospitals to help with coping and normalization. Additionally, child life specialists can also help with reintegrating adolescents back in school by providing coping skills and exercises to reduce anxiety. This assignment demonstrates my ability to communicate and represent the psychosocial needs and issues of patients. Child life services in a psychiatric inpatient setting helps facilitate a therapeutic environment for patients, meeting my first professional goal.
